Child support for grandchildren
As a grandparent, you can apply for a child support assessment if you care for a
child 128 nights or more a year (35 per cent or more care). As a non–parent
carer you must apply for child support from both parents except where:
-
one parent is not a resident of Australia or a
reciprocating jurisdiction,
-
one parent is deceased, or
-
CSA is satisfied there are special circumstances, for example, the other parent is
unknown.
The Child Support Scheme is administered by the Child Support Agency (CSA). The CSA will calculate a child
support assessment based on the child support formula.
Child support payments and
family assistance are closely linked. If you receive child support, your family
assistance will be calculated according to how much child support you receive.
